Special Issue: Agent-Oriented Software Engineering
Software Engineering focuses on both theoretical and practical approaches to robust software development that meets customer requirements within budget and cost constraints. Several software development paradigms were proposed during the history of this discipline, ranging form Structured Development to modern Object and Component-Oriented approaches. As a result we have obtained more powerful models, methodologies and tools for software development. All of them, on the one hand, enable development of even more complex software systems that meet a significantly larger spectrum of user requirements, while on the other, they brought about new requirements that include autonomy, adaptability, flexibility, heterogeneity, a.o. The Agent-Oriented Software Engineering (AOSE) emerged as a way to address these difficulties by proposing a new approach to building software systems. According to the AOSE approach a software system can by decomposed into multiple logical units called “software agents” that can be flexibly configured and combined into a robust multi-agent software system. The AOSE paradigm reuses and enhances the best of Software Engineering approaches and practices ranging from models and methodologies to software platforms and tools.
